I have never heard anyone state that MRDS on pistols will reduce "mistake of fact" shootings. That is a new one on me. The standard argument is that MRDS usage will increase hits on the bad guy. Never mind, a shooter snatching a trigger on a MRDS pistol will miss just as bad as he would with iron sights.
IMO, red dots provide a much quicker firing solution over iron sights. Also, as I’ve gotten older and more dependent on readers, I have trouble picking up the irons. I plan to red dot as many of my guns as possible.
The idea is that you focus on the target and not the dot and that is supposed to reduce "bad" shootings. The big problem that most shooter have now switching to MRDS's is that they have been taught "SIGHTS, FRONTS SIGHT, SIGHTS, SIGHT POST, SIGHTS", they can't seem to focus at the target but want to look at the sights.
